Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 10) Review

Dead in the Family (2010) is the tenth Fantasy novel in the Southern Vampire series, following Dead and Gone. In the previous volume, Lochlan and Neave took Tray and tortured him. Then they captured Sookie and tortured her. Eric and his vampires found and attacked the fairies, killing them.

During the rescue. Bill was stabbed by Neave with her silver dagger and bitten with her silver teeth. Sookie, Tray and Bill were taken to Ludvig's hospital for treatment. Breandan's remaining fairies traced Sookie to the hospital and killed Claudine and Tray.

In this novel, Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress at Merlotte's Bar and Grill. She also has a little disability: she hears what other people are thinking. Since vampires are much less likely to have perceivable thoughts, she tends to relax in their company.

Jason Stackhouse is Sookie's older brother. He was bitten by a werepanther and then married within the Hothouse community. Now his wife is dead, but he has recovered enough to go with another woman.

Erik Northman is a vampire and a Sheriff in the Louisiana kingdom. He owns Fangtasia, a vampire bar in Shreveport. He is now married to Sookie by vampire customs.

Alcide Herveaux is a werewolf and leader of the Shreveport pack. He is also a former beau of Sookie and has accepted her as a Friend of the Pack.

Bill Compton is a vampire. He was Sookie's first lover, but they have long since broken up. He lives across the cemetery from Sookie's house.

Sam Merlotte is owner of the bar where Sookie works. He is a pure shapeshifter, able to change into almost any animal, but he prefers to transform into a collie. Sam still has not revealed his love for Sookie.

Niall is a fairy prince and Sookie's great-grandfather. He has only recently come into Sookie's life and she is very happy to have more family, even if they are fae.

Claude is a fairy and gay. He is a grandson of Niall and Sookie's cousin. He still misses Claudine.

In this story, Amelia has been living with Sookie, but is now returning to New Orleans. She really misses Tray. And the witches there want to talk with her about her transformation of Bob into a cat. She needs more training to prevent such incidents.

When Amelia departs, Sookie is left alone in her house. Then Claude arrives and asks to move in. He is very lonely now that other fairies have left the human world.

Sookie has just enough fairy blood to alleviate his loneliness. She is also feeling a bit lonely, so she lets him move into the upstairs bedroom. She makes sure that he understands the rules, but Claude doesn't listen too well and will need more instructions.

Sookie learns at work that Sam is going with a werewolf from the Shreveport Pack. He is hearing about a proposed federal bill in Congress that would regulate the Weres. Naturally the Weres are very angry about the proposal, but many citizens are terrified of the Weres and want more protection.

Then Alcide calls to ask permission for the Pack to use Sookie's land for the full-moon run. Sookie thinks it over and agrees. After the festivities, a werewolf tells her that there is a long dead body on her land and that two fairies and a vampire have recently gone through.

Sookie knows about the body and the vampire was probably Bill. The fairies, however, are another matter. Most of the fae are back in their homelands with the portals closed. To her knowledge, only Claude and Dermot have been left behind.

Sookie checks with Claude and he hasn't gone into the woods. Yet he isn't certain about Dermot. Fairies cannot lie, but Sookie is sure that he is not telling the whole truth.

Sookie calls Eric to explain the situation. He sends a tracker to look over the land. She arrives a couple of days later and finds two bodies -- one recently dead -- in the woods.

Erik believes that the Weres are endangering Sookie. Alcide insists that he knows nothing about the new body. Sookie and Jason are invited to the next Pack meeting to discuss the issue.

This tale presents Sookie with various problems. Eric is also having difficulties with the new vampire regime. He is still Sheriff, but the King's regent is getting ambitious.

Sookie is caught in the middle once more. Although her telepathy is coveted by the supes, these predators look upon her as prey. Yet she has surprised a few supes who attacked her.

Some things are settled in this volume, but others are left hanging. The next installment is currently underway. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural politics, telepathic humans, and a bit of romance. Anyone who is not familiar with this series should start with the initial volume: Dead Until Dark.

Not the best Sookie book... but better than any other vampire/supe books. Ms Harris stays true to her characters while trying to fill in some of the blanks that TRUE BLOOD has made up. Good enough to keep me reading and anxiously waiting for the next book!

a slow boil - Miriador - New York, New York USA
Before I bought this book, I noticed a lot of harsh reviews, so I waited... and I started re-reading the series. Well, I couldn't wait any longer so I finally bought this book to continue Sookie's journey, and I'm glad I did.

It's a little bit of a slow start, but my gosh, after the last book that was jam-packed with action, it almost made sense for Sookie to have a few "normal" days!

There were some new characters introduced that were sort of odd introductions... townsfolk Sookie had known all her life but were just introduced to the reader. That was a little confusing, but still added flavor to Bon Temps, so once I opened myself up to the "tone" of this book, I began to enjoy it more and more.

Once I hit the middle of the book, I couldn't put it down!

There are some vampire politics that might make your head spin, but Eric's maker is finally introduced, and he and his other child are FRIGHTENING.

Bill has a neat side story that was quite unexpected. And just like with Lorena and Bill, Eric's Maker is all-powerful over his child, so Eric is forced into quite a different role, almost painfully subdued from his usual seductive self.

There are still some fae connections - Claude and some other fairies didn't go to Fairyland, it seems - and luckily, Sookie is still the strong, feisty heroine we've come to know and love. :)

When I finished the book, I felt satisfied. I liked it. I really liked it and will definitely re-read it.

The Sookie Stackhouse series is always a fun series to re-read.

Looking forward to the next adventure!

Always something new - Stephenie Bechiom - JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, US
I like how Charlaine Harris introduces something new in each book. Werewolves, witches, fairies - oh, my! I'm not ready to let go of these characters. I'm enjoying the heck out of these books.

OMG! WHAT HAPPENED HERE - JAC LEEN - NYC
I LOVED ALL OF THE "DEAD" BOOKS. THIS ONE IS SO DISAPPOINTING. IT KEPT ME READING BUT THE STORY NEVER UNFOLDED - IT JUST WENT ON AND ON AND ON AND THEN STOPPED. I WAS EXPECTING SO MUCH MORE AND DIDN'T GET IT. I HOPE THE NEXT BOOK IS BETTER ESPECIALLY FOR MY MONEY.
