Garbage - Ashley Lucchese - Chicago, IL
First, consider the authors. One is a "self-taught know-it-all" and one has a Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition, but does not list the school on the book jacket. Turns out the degree was obtained through correspondence classes from an unaccredited college.

The main crux of the book is getting "healthy," which in turn, will make you "skinny." I urge anyone who is truly interested in getting healthy to avoid this book. Consult your doctor and for reading material heralding eating real foods and suggestions for easing into a wholesale change in diet, pick up Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food.

It is difficult to praise even the positive tenets of the book, like limiting consumption of foodstuffs with artificial additives, because each page is riddled with scare-tactic, biased information, based more on opinion than fact. Not to mention, the book is teeming with expletives and a condescending, disrespectful tone.

Well, they got the "Bitch" part right - Heather - Wisconsin United States
I gave this book a rating of two partially because of the condescending attitude and partially because I thought the title was misleading. I thought I'd be reading a book that gave healthy eating and exercising tips, most likely in a humorous way. Instead it's a book telling you unless you are a vegan who only eats organic, you're stupid (along with a variety of other names you are called throughout the book unless you are doing exactly what the authors believe in) and killing yourself and your family.

There isn't a middle ground, such as suggesting that if you can't afford to eat everything organic start with trying to buy organic fruits or vegetables. Instead, it's an all or nothing approach. I did get a few good and interesting tidbits of information (like good sugar substitutes), but it's overshadowed by the name-calling.

I think the underlying message is good, that we need to cut out the bad "chemicals" that are in our foods and the unhealthy eating, but I already lean that way (I don't eat red meat and a large portion of my groceries are organic), so I was able to get through the book with a lot of eye-rolling, but without just throwing it down in disgust. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that they will turn off a lot of readers with the all or nothing and if you don't see it that way you're a f*&%ing idiot approach.

Terrible book, don't waste your time - Kari D'Amico - San Jose, CA
This has got to be the worst diet book I've ever read. Obviously they have an agenda and it has NOTHING to do with getting women to eat healthy. What the hell does make-up, lotions and toothpaste have to do with healthy eating? Ok, I get the whole my skin is an organ thing, SO WHAT!!!

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! I feel ripped off. Not only did I pay money but invested my time to read this garbage.

Check Out The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Review

There's probably not much more to be said about this book and it's hard to imagine that there are many literate people over the age of about 25 who won't have encountered this story, the first in Douglas Adams's 'trilogy' (in five parts) of books, in one form or other - it's generally accepted to be a classic, of course.

I received a slightly abridged audio version of this book when I was about 12 or 13 and absolutely loved it and I still love it now. I've since read it in full and, whilst the book is short and easy to read, it just works wonderfully on many different levels because it simply overflows not only with wit and memorable dialogue but, most importantly, with ideas - ideas of all kinds - including numerous allusions to some of the things that we know Douglas Adams was interested in (i.e. science and religion) and one just can't help but keep coming back to it again and again.

There are so many memorable bits to this book, bits of which I'm regularly reminded as I go through life; indeed, the vivid description, of Ford - "The sweat stood out cold on Ford Prefect's brow..." - immediately prior to his and Arthur's close encounter with 'the third worst poetry in the universe', is inevitably brought to my mind whenever a Meatloaf song comes onto the radio. Other episodes that are always available for rapid recall include Arthur's account of his visit to the display department of the local planning office, the descriptions (as provided by the 'Hitchhiker's Guide') of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal, and of why it's important to carry a towel with you, as you 'hitchhike' round the galaxy, to the curious last words of a bowl of Petunias and, of course, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

This book is now practically a cornerstone of popular culture, certainly in the UK, and every child should read it as soon as they're old enough to comprehend it. Long may it continue to be read and loved and reread, the world over.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Overview

A one-volume edition of the four HITCH HIKER novels, comprising: THE HITCH HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE, LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING, and SO LONG AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Specifications

It's safe to say that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of the funniest science fiction novels ever written. Adams spoofs many core science fiction tropes: space travel, aliens, interstellar war--stripping away all sense of wonder and repainting them as commonplace, even silly.

This omnibus edition begins with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which Arthur Dent is introduced to the galaxy at large when he is rescued by an alien friend seconds before Earth's destruction. Then in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Arthur and his new friends travel to the end of time and discover the true reason for Earth's existence. In Life, the Universe, and Everything, the gang goes on a mission to save the entire universe. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish recounts how Arthur finds true love and "God's Final Message to His Creation." Finally, Mostly Harmless is the story of Arthur's continuing search for home, in which he instead encounters his estranged daughter, who is on her own quest. There's also a bonus short story, "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe," more of a vignette than a full story, which wraps up this completist's package of the Don't Panic chronicles. As the series progresses, its wackier elements diminish, but the satire of human life and foibles is ever present. --Brooks Peck

Check Out Skippy Dies: A Novel for $18.45

Skippy Dies: A Novel Review

That's an Irish word for an English word whose meaning seeps through the first third of this surprisingly well-written and funny novel by a dude who I only heard of about a month or two ago coz he's Irish and so am I apparently although living this last long time in exile but I went back for a break in August and Skippy Dies, Mister Murray's second novel, got itself longlisted or some such rhubarb and next thing me sister hands the very book to me to see what I think. I swapped her out of some obscure principle Bruce Robinson's devastatingly funny and sad and happy and lovely novel, The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, another book about a 14-year-old schoolboy that I read each autumn on account of it reminds me of autumns in Ireland (even though it's set in England, in the late fifties I think, but in the end, what's the big bleeding diff?) when school starts up again and the summer's over. "The old story of the salad days, torment in the terms and in the intervals a measure of ease," as the felly said. Any road up it turns out that the young Irish author's younger than I am which is always a great laugh and furthermore has supposedly laid out a picture of an Ireland I never even got to know, having fled the wretched little outpost as early as 1991. Believe me even as late as late 1991 Ireland was still well and truly mired in its perpetually dismal circumstances with nothing much by way of succour but thick woolly socks and the ubiquitous Wellington boot. Then suddenly all bets were off and some species of hell broke loose and people from the country shucked off their wellies and started swallying brand new bricks of Dubliner cheese and the roads got wider and straighter and automobile ownership mushroomed beyond all comprehension and the word mortgage gained an unheard-of new currency among the green and giddy populace which reminds me they changed from the pound or punt or whatever it was they used to buy a lump of pints with to the Euro the eejits and the coin component of this new Monopoly money is called the cent, just like here, except that the Irish in yet another stupefyingly typical instance of their famed resistance to just the most obvious structures of authority denominate this denomination in the strictest singular. Never cents, always and only cent. Like that excruciatingly awful Al Pacino movie. That'll be eight hundred Euros and seventy five cent, please. And that's just for a cake in Kylemore, a baked goods emporium which doesn't even exist anymore! At any rate I missed completely this total tribal transformation so I thought maybe I'd see how a novelist present during the duration of such an unprecedentedly high Hibernian tide might present it. Plus also the setting is a school run by what Murray styles The Holy Paraclete Fathers and these happen to be more or less the same exact holy ghosts who ran the secondary shool I went to in Dublin during the seventies (class of 81), we were in fact a baby sister college of Blackrock College, the giant blue and white striped kip Seabrook is allegedly based on and which used to invariably kick the living crap out of us at both JCT and SCT levels, to mention rugby only. So I guess you could say I was primed but apprehensive and perhaps even a little nostalgic too prior to taking the plunge into Skippy Dies but so far, and I'm about twenty pages into Heartland, the second book, I have to tell ya this Murray chap does a lovely clean line in comedy and the pacing burns oxygen when it has to but mostly it seems to me there's a real sense of considered unfolding going on here and I for one am enjoying the entertainment hugely. The janitor's name is Noddy too I also couldn't help but notice. This far in I'm going to go out on a limb here and say so far so very bleeding good. The two disputatious little dudeens at the Halloween Hop gesticulating inscrutably in their gigantic trousers and hijacking the sound system? Well that's a right larf right there. And rightly or wrongly I seem to picture Aurelie McIntyre as a slightly naughtier version of the stunningly gorgeous elementary school teacher Miss Cross from that great 1998 movie Rushmore. The delectable Olivia Williams played Miss Cross, I know that coz I've had a big fat crush on her ever since I saw Wes Anderson's priceless film.

Skippy Dies: A Novel Overview

Why does Skippy, a fourteen-year-old boy at Dublin’s venerable Seabrook College, end up dead on the floor of the local doughnut shop?

Could it have something to do with his friend Ruprecht Van Doren, an overweight genius who is determined to open a portal into a parallel universe using ten-dimensional string theory?

Could it involve Carl, the teenage drug dealer and borderline psychotic who is Skippy’s rival in love?

Or could “the Automator”—the ruthless, smooth-talking headmaster intent on modernizing the school—have something to hide?

Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the subject of this dazzling and uproarious novel, unraveling a mystery that links the boys of Seabrook College to their parents and teachers in ways nobody could have imagined. With a cast of characters that ranges from hip-hop-loving fourteen-year-old Eoin “MC Sexecutioner” Flynn to basketballplaying midget Philip Kilfether, packed with questions and answers on everything from Ritalin, to M-theory, to bungee jumping, to the hidden meaning of the poetry of Robert Frost, Skippy Dies is a heartfelt, hilarious portrait of the pain, joy, and occasional beauty of adolescence, and a tragic depiction of a world always happy to sacrifice its weakest members. As the twenty-first century enters its teenage years, this is a breathtaking novel from a young writer who will come to define his generation.

Skippy Dies: A Novel Specifications

Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2010: Seabrook College is an all-boys Catholic prep school in contemporary Dublin, where the founding Fathers flounder under a new administration obsessed with the school's "brand" and teachers vacillate between fear and apathy when faced with rooms full of texting, hyper-tense, hormone-fueled boys. It's the boys--and one boy in particular--that give this raucous, tender novel its emotional kick. Daniel "Skippy" Juster is a breed apart from his friends, more sensitive than any of them, but never visibly reactive to the pressures that weigh heavily on him. The events that lead to his untimely (though tragicomic) death unfold scene by scene, in a chorus of perfectly executed moments that are powerful enough to make you laugh and weep at once. When you read Skippy Dies, you won't necessarily feel like a teenager again--and in fact, may realize you'd never want to--but you'll certainly appreciate how painful, exhilarating, and confusing it still is to grow up. --Anne Bartholomew

There is no truth - just perceptions - S. M. Pratt - New Zealand
What a nice book - ok, so the story is a little dark - it's no secret that skippy dies but..... One of the things that the book told me is that there is no truth, just a series of perceptions about what might be truth. Each of the characters have their own stories, told their own way, about their view of events. Each story is complete and reasonable from their perspective but ultimately wrong and the reader has to guess at the real reason behind Skippy's death. Nicely crafted, nice language and quite believable.

Youth (isn't) wasted on the young here - Robert Daniel - USA
Five stars. Loved it. Funny, touching, full of wonder and youthful foibles. Written beautifully; I'm a full-blown Paul Murray fan now. For me, one of its best aspects is that it is set in the world TODAY. So many of these "adolescent boarding school tales" are set in the past. Makes 'em seem distant. This is in your face, and it packs a heartfelt wallop.

All the Strings and Theory - K. L. Cotugno - San Francisco, CA USA
The events preceding and following an untimely, useless death are examined in depth with a unique perspective. This coming of age novel, in which almost everyone but the eponymous hero attains insight and maturity, is by turns filled with unbearable sadness laced with shots of original hilarity. The book meanders through an usually fraught autumn in the school year of a Dublin boys' school. It is populated almost entirely with the students and faculty (both lay and clergy), with parents only appearing as necessary. This would seem to indicate that the importance of the privileged homes these boys came from wasn't important, but oddly enough, the effect of the parents' benign neglect and self absorbtion is one of the most insidious aspects of the events as they materialize. For example, the "school psychopath" as described in other reviews has a home life that somewhat explains his need to do things he does that set ripples in motion.

Given the subject matter, I was initially put off by the book's length, but with few exceptions, there is very little bloat. According to those who have attended such schools, the jargon is spot on, the obsession with sex and desire to be somewhere else, anywhere else but "here," jibes with experience.

Epic - J. Prather - IN USA
It's not often that you pick up a novel that tackles such disparate topics as quantum physics, World War 1 history, Irish folklore, and donuts...lots of donuts. Skippy Dies reminded me of how mind - blowingly obnoxious teenage boys can be and also how crushingly hard it is to be fourteen. It's not for everyone. If you are easily offended by crass talk and lewd behavior, then this book is not for you. It is a very well told story full of humor and heartbreak that uses all of it's 661 pages to make you laugh, despair, contemplate your existence, and wonder how any of us every survive the trials of adolescence. The author expertly weaves together his story through the lives of characters carefully constructed and richly portrayed. The tale of how their lives intersect is both tragic and comic. Even though on occasion I felt that fate was truly messing with these people a bit too much, or when the irony and combined tragedies were just a bit too overwhelming, the author never lost my interest or my belief in his story.

So how does an author turn a book that gives away the ending in the prologue into a riveting page turner? You know what's going to happen...it's in the title! I don't know exactly how he did it, but I do know that he kept me up late wanting to know exactly how Skippy ended up dead, why Howard was called a coward, just what was up with Ruprecht and his inventions (I never thought string theory could be so engaging), and what exactly was the dark secret Skippy didn't want to face. He doles this information out as the story moves along, resulting in a perfectly paced read. This was a rich intricate novel that makes many that I've read lately pale in comparison. It should be winning many prizes this year, all well deserved. A solid choice for fans of literary fiction, especially coming of age stories. Recommended.

Mr. Shivers Review

For reasons obvious once read, Mr. Shivers reminds me of The Blasters "Dark Night":

"Hot air hangs like a dead man
From an white oak tree..."

Mr. Shivers is an amazing novel. That it is a debut book makes it all the more impressive.

In the over stocked shelves of new fiction, Mr. Bennett stands out far above the rest; like an elephant charging at you through a field of wheat.

I was unsure if I wanted to buy this book until I started reading the first couple of pages. There is zero doubt that Mr. Bennett can write. His prose is crisp, original, vivid, poetic and terse. No wasted words. Every syllable is there for a reason.

The book just drags you down into the dark further and further. You hardly want to grab the sides of the tunnel you're sliding down (not that it would do any good anyway) but you welcome the plunge into the abyss.

In the late 80's and early 90's this would have been labeled "dark fantasy". If Cormic McCarthy had penned it they would label it "literature". Take your pick. I just call it great writing.

Grab a copy and enjoy. Bennett is a fresh voice worth listening to.

Mr. Shivers Overview

It is the time of the Great Depression.

Thousands have left their homes looking for a better life, a new life. But Marcus Connelly is not one of them. He searches for one thing, and one thing only: Revenge.

Because out there, riding the rails, stalking the camps, is the scarred vagrant who murdered Connelly's daughter.

One man must face a dark truth and answer the question - how much is he willing to sacrifice for his satisfaction?

Mr. Shivers Specifications

Amazon Best Books of the Month, January 2010: With his debut novel, Mr. Shivers, Southern writer Robert Jackson Bennett presents a pulpy, Great Depression horror story where a mysterious killer "trails death behind him." After his daughter is brutally murdered, a revenge-seeking Marcus Connelly leaves Memphis on a hunt across America's hobo camps and ghost towns for the grotesquely scarred, ghostly figure known as "Mr. Shivers." On his quest Connelly teams up with a scrappy band of hobos recovering from their own brushes with "the gray man," and the body count increases as they ride the rails tracking their target. Connelly's spiraling bloodlust begins to rival Shivers's, threatening to take more than just his family and friends away from him. Sprinkled with hobo folklore, Bennett's supernatural dust storm of a debut offers a killer premise and may remind readers of vintage Stephen King. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Chilling - Rie Sheridan Rose - Austin, Tx United States
I loved this book. I had serious trouble putting it down. The language was extremely poetic, and evocative, and that was one of the things I loved about it. Some reviewers have groused about the complexity and depth of characters, but to me, it was a dark fantasy allegory, and the characters were exactly as deep as they needed to be. Even the minor characters were painted with deft brushstrokes--they might not have been fully developed, but they were all memorable. Although there were few real surprises as far as the through-line of the plot went, the story moved at a swift pace, and kept me turning pages. All in all, this was an impressive debut, and I am looking forward to Bennett's next offering.

Loses Strength and Direction - Jeffrey Swystun - Ottawa & New York
Bennett's first novel is a fine effort that cannot sustain itself. Set during the Great Depression, he uses that backdrop to create a dark and disturbing landscape of a country and people battling economic hardship. Given the despair, many fall back on superstition and folk tales. Among those is the creepy Mr. Shivers who may or may not be a real man. Finding him and ultimately dealing with him is the quest of the main character Marcus Connelly who has had his life ruined by the scar-faced man.

It reminded me of The Odyssey or more accurately the Coen brothers movie treatment of the same, O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Connelly and his band of fellow victims track Mr. Shivers across dust bowl America and are confronted by a series of strange characters along the way. I would give the first half of the book a five star rating but unfortunately the last half falls apart due to both supernatural explanations and unnecessary plot devices. It seems the author lost his way along with Marcus and could not maintain the tone, suspense, and more engaging rationale that commenced the book.

Know What You're Getting Into - Jay-Z Fetish - Missoula, MT
Most of the bad reviews I read stated that they didn't initially understand that it would contain some supernatural elements, so they were lost when they got to that part. Having expected it, I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the characters, and while their histories weren't always entirely fleshed out, it was made clear that this was on purpose--the characters themselves were driven by the fact that their histories were something they were looking to avenge, but not talk about. There is also a slow spot just before the climax, where the main character Connelly is left reeling so the ending sort of sneaks up on you, but I actually kind of enjoyed that as well.

I definitely enjoyed the first full length novel from Jackson. Having been a fan of his previous work, it was nice to see something longer and more substantial, and I can't wait for more.

Creepy and Suspenseful - Jessica Tate - Texas
The story starts the reader off thinking that Connelly is after a serial killer. The plot is very suspenseful and keeps the reader wondering where the man out for vengeance will go next. It takes place during The Great Depression so traveling by train and meandering as a hobo was a constant part of the story. Connelly is a strong character with much depth. The reader feels his pain and relates to him in wanting to get revenge on Mr. Shivers.

The supporting characters were a little more shallow and not as developed. At times there were too many characters for the reader to keep up with.

All in all, this book was very well written. It creeped me out and that takes a lot for a book to do that to me. I will be looking into more books by this author.

James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell: Author One-on-One
In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell and asked them to interview each other. Find out what two of the top authors of their genres have to say about their characters, writing process, and more.

Patricia Cornwell is the former Director of Applied Forensic Science at the National Forensic Academy, and a member of the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital's National Council, where she is an advocate for psychiatric research. She is the author of sixteen previous Kay Scarpetta mysteries, five non-Scarpetta novels (including At Risk), and Portrait of a Killer. Read on to see Patricia Cornwell's questions for James Patterson, or turn the tables to see what Patterson asked Cornwell.

Patricia CornwellCornwell: James, your questions were so good, I'm going to ask you similar ones. Let's start with why you write? Do you love it or love having done it? What motivates you?

Patterson: I truly love writing. I sometimes think about my grandfather when I reflect on this. When I was a boy, I lived in a town on the Hudson River. During the summers, my grandfather would take me once a week on his frozen food and ice cream delivery route. We'd be up at four in the morning packing up the truck, and by five we'd be on our way. Driving a delivery truck isn't the most glamorous job in the world, but every morning, my grandfather would drive over the Storm King Mountain toward West Point, and he'd be singing at the top of his voice. And he told me this: "Jim," he said, "when you grow up, I don't care if you're a truck driver or a famous surgeon—just remember that when you go over the mountain to work in the morning, you've got to be singing." Writing stories keeps me singing. Writing to me isn't work, and I like that a ton.

Cornwell: What is your routine when you're facing your next novel? What is the process like for you, and what is your favorite part of it? Least favorite?

Patterson: I like to have a lot of ideas in the air at one time. I've got around 20 manuscripts sitting in my office right now, in some degree of completion. It's a lot of material, a lot of stories. My least favorite part? Hmm. Maybe sharpening pencils? Actually, I’ve always kind of liked sharpening pencils. I don’t mean to seem too over the top about this, but I really wouldn’t change any of it.

Cornwell: What do you and Alex Cross have in common? How are you different?

Patterson: We're both family-oriented guys. I think it's a real treat to be able to get along with your wife every day, which I do; my wife and I really have trouble being apart for very long. And I think readers will agree Alex is generally doing better in the romance department. One difference between us would be that I'm much more content to sit around and write. I think Alex would get a little bored on a "ride-along" with me.

Cornwell: What inspired you to create Alex Cross?

Patterson: Hardly anyone knows it but when I started the first Alex Cross novel, Alex was a woman named Alexis. After 100 pages or so, I changed the character to Alex. When I was a kid growing up, my grandparents had a small restaurant and the cook was an African-American woman who eventually moved into our house. All through my growing up period I spent a lot of time with this woman's family. They were funny, wise, the food was great, so was the music, and the family is at least part of the inspiration for the Crosses.

Cornwell: What's the one thing a reader has said that you've never forgotten and perhaps found startling?

Patterson: I'm sure you've had this, too, Patricia, but the one comment that gets me every time is hearing people say my books have them reading again. I know sometimes you and I get some heat for being as popular as we are, and are saddled with that old equation that says if you're a bestseller, you must be lowbrow. But I frankly don't think there’s anything more meaningful than hearing that I've turned a person back into a reader (or in the case of younger readers, got them started).

Cornwell: How about you? You're the one with all the movies! Good experience or not?

Patterson: Sounds like we're on the same page there, Patricia. I definitely feel like some past projects didn't quite live up to their potential. And I likewise have hopes for a couple of movies in the works: the third Alex Cross movie, and the very first Maximum Ride movie, which has Avi Arad (producer of Spider Man), Catherine Hardwicke (director of Twilight), and Don Payne (writer for The Simpsons) on board. There's also a very promising TV series based on a new book I've written that's being developed with CBS and Imagine.

I wish I had read these reviews before buying this sad excuse for a book. Like many of the other reviewers, I read an Alex Cross book years ago, thought it was ok, bought this one on impulse. Awful book. I cannot understand how it got published. From the one-dimensional characters to the insipid dialogue to the two-page chapters and anemic plot - I could go on. Bad writing. Bad, bad, bad. Someone should be very ashamed.

Very dissapointing - AnnieB - Des Moines, Ia
This is not normal James Patterson style. It was very poorly written and yes I love Alex's beloved "nana mama" but this whole book centered around her and not the true plot line. In three words...DO NOT BUY. If you feel you must read it go to the library.

Kindle Rip Off - John R. Sheehan - Manhattan, NY
I haven't read the book - but if I do it will be in a hardcover edition (Currently available new at .99) or the just-released paperback (don't remember the price but around ) - the Kindle price - .99. Do the publishers want to kill the Kindle business? If this up pricing of electronic books continues, I will certainly go back to the Used book store - where the publisher makes NOTHING on the sale. Selfish and stupid.

A Death in Vienna (Gabriel Allon Novels) Review

When Israeli spymaster, Ari Shamron, asks Allon to track down who was behind the bombing and bring them to justice, a twisted international trail of clues and history leads Allon to tales of his own mother's death march to Auschwitz and traces of Sturmbannführer Erich Radek, now living as Ludwig Vogel, a prominent high profile, wealthy and very influential businessman in Vienna. During the latter stages of WWII, when Hitler and all of his senior staff knew that Germany was losing the war to the squeeze between advancing western Allied and Russian forces, it was a sadistic, psychotic Radek's overwhelming and horrifying job to literally eradicate the existence of the Holocaust from history, to erase the evidence that it ever existed, to bury the camps and to destroy the bodies and mass burial sites.

Like many other spy vs spy espionage thrillers set either in the 1940s or set in the present but related to the context of the events of WWII, the plot of A DEATH IN VIENNA is not a simple one - a complex trail of clues and events, intermingling of historical events with current day happenings, a seemingly endless cast of characters, the mystifying motives of political, racial and military imperatives and a literal maze of globetrotting travel and communication. Who's on whose side, why somebody is doing what they're doing, who's gunning for who, who's telling the truth and who's twisting the facts for their own unstated purposes is never obvious and a reader, if they hope to take anything away from the story, will have to pay close attention from first page to last.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that Silva's Nazi thriller stories are acceptable but not great in comparison with the likes of Jack Higgins or even Ken Follett, for example. But (and I believe this is much more important) this remarkable thriller also allows Silva to continue his story of the Eastern European death camps, the brutal genocide that was the Holocaust and the heartbreaking tale of one woman's courageous story. The way in which Silva tells the story of the plight of the Jewish people during the war, far from being a distracting side story or merely a side bar essay, lifts A DEATH IN VIENNA from a routine and probably unremarkable thriller to a moving and entirely outstanding tale of both mystery, passion and heartbreak.

Even if you are not a particularly big fan of the thriller genre, A DEATH IN VIENNA, as the culmination of the series that includes THE CONFESSOR and THE ENGLISH ASSASSIN, is well worth reading for the history and the back story alone. Highly recommended.

Amazon Exclusive Essay: Daniel Silva on Gabriel Allon and the "Accidental Series"

Writers tend to be solitary creatures. We toil alone for months on end, then, once a year, we emerge from our dens to publish a book. It can be a daunting experience, especially for someone like me, who is not gregarious and outgoing by nature. But there is one aspect of promotion I truly love: meeting my readers and answering their questions. During each stop on my book tour, I reserve the bulk of my time for a lively conversation with the audience. I learn much from these encounters-indeed, some of the comments are so insightful they take my breath away. There is one question I am asked each night without fail, and it remains my favorite: "How in the world did you ever think of Gabriel Allon?" The answer is complicated. In one sense, he was the result of a long, character-construction process. In another, he was a bolt from the blue. I'll try to explain.

In 1999, after publishing The Marching Season, the second book in the Michael Osbourne series, I decided it was time for a change. We were nearing the end of the Clinton administration, and the president was about to embark on a last-ditch effort to bring peace to the Middle East. I had the broad outlines of a story in mind: a retired Israeli assassin is summoned from retirement to track down a Palestinian terrorist bent on destroying the Oslo peace process. I thought long and hard before giving the Israeli a name. I wanted it to be biblical, like my own, and to be heavy with symbolism. I finally decided to name him after the archangel Gabriel. As for his family name, I chose something short and simple: Allon, which means "oak tree" in Hebrew. I liked the image it conveyed. Gabriel Allon: God's angel of vengeance, solid as an oak.

Gabriel's professional résumé-the operations he had carried out-came quickly. But what about his other side? What did he like to do in his spare time? What was his cover? I knew I wanted something distinct. Something memorable. Something that would, in many respects, be the dominant attribute of his character. I spent many frustrating days mulling over and rejecting possibilities. Then, while walking along one of Georgetown's famous redbrick sidewalks, my wife, Jamie, reminded me that we had a dinner date that evening at the home of David Bull, a man regarded as one of the finest art restorers in the world. I stopped dead in my tracks and raised my hands toward the heavens. Gabriel Allon was complete. He was going to be an art restorer, and a very good one at that.

Over my objections, the book was entitled The Kill Artist and it would go on to become a New York Times bestseller. It was not, however, supposed to be the first book in a long-running series. But once again, fate intervened. In 2000, after moving to G.P. Putnam & Sons, my new publishers asked me what I was working on. When I mumbled something about having whittled it down to two or three options, they offered their first piece of advice. They really didn't care what it was about, they just wanted one thing: Gabriel Allon.

I then spent the next several minutes listing all the reasons why Gabriel, now regarded as one of the most compelling and successful continuing characters in the mystery-thriller genre, should never appear in a second book. I had conceived him as a "one off" character, meaning he would be featured in one story and then ride into the sunset. I also thought he was too melancholy and withdrawn to build a series around, and, at nearly fifty years of age, perhaps a bit too old as well. My biggest concern, however, had to do with his nationality and religion. I thought there was far too much opposition to Israel in the world-and far too much raw anti-Semitism-for an Israeli continuing character ever to be successful in the long term.

My new publishers thought otherwise, and told me so. Because Gabriel lived in Europe and could pass as German or Italian, they believed he came across as more "international" than Israeli. But what they really liked was Gabriel's other job: art restoration. They found the two opposing sides of his character-destroyer and healer-fascinating. What's more, they believed he would stand alone on the literary landscape. There were lots of CIA officers running around saving the world, they argued, but no former Israeli assassins who spent their spare time restoring Bellini altarpieces.

The more they talked, the more I could see their point. I told them I had an idea for a story involving Nazi art looting during the Second World War and the scandalous activities of Swiss banks. "Write it with Gabriel Allon," they said, "and we promise it will be your biggest-selling book yet." Eventually, the book would be called The English Assassin, and, just as Putnam predicted, it sold twice as many copies as its predecessor. Oddly enough, when it came time to write the next book, I still wasn't convinced it should be another Gabriel novel. Though it seems difficult to imagine now, I actually conceived the plot of The Confessor without him in mind. Fortunately, my editor, Neil Nyren, saved me from myself. The book landed at #5 on the New York Times bestseller list and received some of the warmest reviews of my career. After that, a series was truly born.

I am often asked whether it is necessary to read the novels in sequence. The answer is no, but it probably doesn't hurt, either. For the record, the order of publication is The Kill Artist, The English Assassin, The Confessor, A Death in Vienna, Prince of Fire, The Messenger, The Secret Servant, and Moscow Rules, my first #1 New York Times bestseller. The Defector pits Gabriel in a final, dramatic confrontation with the Russian oligarch and arms dealer Ivan Kharkov, and I have been told it far surpasses anything that has come before it in the series. And to think that, if I'd had my way, only one Gabriel Allon book would have been written. I remain convinced, however, that had I set out in the beginning to create him as a continuing character, I would surely have failed. I have always believed in the power of serendipity. Art, like life, rarely goes according to plan. Gabriel Allon is proof of that.

The Best of Friends (Pocket Readers Guide) Review

In high school in Southern California, Jayne Scott was an introverted student who spilled coffee on herself even while walking through life cautiously. Rebecca Worden was a beautiful extrovert who ran through life as if running the 100 yard dash, but never spilled a drop on herself. They became the best of friends and remained BFFs though Rebecca fled the country for the past dozen years.

While Rebecca was overseas, her mother Elizabeth and to a lesser degree her dad Blaine "adopted" Jayne as her offspring when the latter's mom died. Now Rebecca has come home to cause her mother havoc. However, the return of the prodigal natural daughter may impact her pal big time, but not as much as the return of Elizabeth's prodigal son David, who the introverted Jayne has loved since first meeting him back in her high school days.

This is an entertaining extended family drama that fans will enjoy as the cast, for the most part, seems genuine. In spite of Elizabeth being over the top of the Sierras with her all consuming control of anyone inside her sphere, she makes the tale entertaining as she manipulates those who try to care about her. Readers will enjoy the Best of Friends as the audience will want to know what happens to Jayne.

Came Off the Rails a Bit - R. Nau - California
***Semi-spoiler alert!!*** Mallery had me hooked from the beginning. Loved the characters, the story, the fact that it's set in L.A. where I used to live. However, about 2/3 of the way through, the story just seemed to fall apart for me. I didn't buy the big shift in attitude displayed by Rebecca toward Jayne. It seemed too forced, used merely as a catalyst for David and his father to come to terms with what their futures should be. The mom's behavior should easily have served as enough provocation for them. Even the ending didn't redeem this plot twist, but it DID make me hope that she will do a sequel telling Rebecca's story going forward from the last page.

Loved It! - Sharon A. Schofield - Haverhill, MA United States
I am a huge fan of Susan Mallery's and this story did not disappoint me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this (not to mention going through half a box of tissues while doing so). I read this in one day...I could not put it down. Loved Jayne and I loved how this story ended...for all the main characters (NOT gonna spoil the ending)! I'm hoping there will be a sequel someday featuring Rebecca. Thanks Susan for another great story!

great read - D Hall - USA
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it in one day. I loved it from page one. I like the way she explained Jaynes relationship with everyone in Rebecca's family. I recomend this one to everyone. I have read Susan Mallery books for a very long time and i love them all. This one will have you cheering and wanting to hurt someone all at the same time. I can't say how much i really liked this one but then i love everything she writes.

The Best of Friends - Annmarie - Atlanta, Georgia
The Best of Friends is different than Susan Mallery's other novels. I loved every bit of this book and found it so very moving. I am a fan of school girl crushes coming to fruition. Because I'm a simple girl that would have been enough. The added emotional depth of this novel took this book from 'happy sigh' to 'happy sigh' plus a bonus 'I can't stop thinking about these characters and wondering what happens next?' reaction. Her best work to date, I highly recommend The Best of Friends.

Your Best Body Now Review

I have Tosca Reno's two previous clean eating books, so I wasn't sure if this one would be redundant. While it does contain some overlap (for instance, this book starts by Reno telling her personal story of her struggles with weight, but it emphasizes different aspects of her tale than her previous books), I still think it's a great addition to one's clean-eating arsenal. (The overlap is the reason that I gave this four stars instead of five; there is background information on clean eating that you will find in Reno's other CE books.) My review will be focused on comparing this new book to Reno's previous two books, although I will try to add information for readers who may not be familiar with the principles of clean eating.

If you're new to clean eating, the basic premise is that instead of counting calories, you eat as closely to nature as possible, making sure to eat a protein at every meal and snack. Also, instead of eating just three meals a day, you graze throughout the day, eating five or six "mini-meals." When I first started following Tosca's principles in her first clean eating book a few years ago, I was able to go down from a size 6 to a size 0 -- and I was never hungry! It's nice to not be on a "diet," but rather on a meal plan that allows you to eat a lot, retain muscle, and lose body fat.

Since as of the date of my review (10/5/10), there is no Look Inside feature available for this book, I thought I'd go ahead and provide a breakdown of the chapters:

--Part I: The Road to a Fabulous New You -- At Any Age
* Chapter 1: My Journey
* Chapter 2: Champion a "New You": Allow Yourself to Live Better
* Chapter 3: Jump-Start Your Best Body Now!

--Part II: Get Your Best Body Now -- For Life
* Chapter 4: Best Body Now Diet
* Chapter 5: Best Body Now Fitness
* Chapter 6: Best Body Now Health
* Chapter 7: Best Body Now Beauty

--Part III: Your Best Body Now Took Kit
* Chapter 8: Best Body Now Inspiration
* Chapter 9: Best Body Now Recipes
* Chapter 10: Best Body Now Journal

--Appendixes with Metric Conversions, References, and Useful Websites

As I mentioned at the start of this review, there is a bit of information (such as the details of Tosca's personal story of losing weight and getting in shape when she was in her 40's), but there is still plenty of useful information. For instance, if you liked the success stories in the revised version of the eat clean book (which I always find inspirational and motivating), you'll enjoy these ones -- all of which feature women who are 40 and over.

There are also strategies and tips that cover the decades from the 30's, 40's, and 50's, although, as another reviewer pointed out, Reno leaves out women who are 60+.

The Best Body Moves section also has great color photos of workout moves to add to your routine. It's nice to see these in full color, and Reno is the model for each of them. If you're new to weight-training, these should really help you with form and with putting together a routine, but if you're a seasoned lifter, you might find the exercises to be a bit more at the intermediate level.

There are also 30 new recipes in this book, which look delicious. The sample Fitness Tracker Journal page at the end can also be xeroxed and used to monitor your goals, and the Inspiration Tracker can be used to develop plans and commitments.

Overall, I'm happy I purchased this. I find Reno to be very motivating and I love looking at the success stories, so it's nice to have a book that is focused on women who are over thirty.

fitness, nutrition, and personal development in one! - M. D. -
This is essentially "Eat-Clean" repackaged to a different segment of the population.

What I loved about this book (over Reno's other books) is her bio of how she went from frumpy to fabulous. To be fair, she does go into this in her other books however, not quite as in depth as she does here. There is an undercurrent of metaphysical/spirituality within the book which is also quite new to Reno's material; she delves into her past of dishonoring herself while putting her husband and children first, her desperate need to please others, followed by how she pulled herself up with incredible courage. By loving herself first and fully, she was able to turn her life around completely; she created a body beautiful, a new husband, a new career, hope, a solid purpose, and a new lease on life. Her story is quite remarkable! After the inspirational bio, Reno also seems to speak to that discouraged part of the reader to become a real 'cheerleader' and the voice of encouragement insisting vibrant health (and a vibrant life) is indeed possible. Outside of this, it reiterates much of what her other books have to say about 'eating clean', strength-based training, and also includes recipes. This book is part fitness/nutrition manual and part personal development coach.

What I disliked about this book is that a lot of it is repackaged material from her other 'eat clean' books. It's a nice attempt to get into the beauty side of things however, outside of how eating clean can affect your exterior appearance, I don't see how make up and facials is relevant; this part of the book would have been better placed in a separate book or left to the experts. Reno could have used this space to elaborate on how a healthy lifestyle affects the mind chemically, how this change affects one's emotions, and how all this (along with the physical changes) drives up self-esteem and revolutionizes every aspect of one's life.

HUGE photos of Tosca on every 10th page. - GIZMO MAVEN - wisconsin dells, wi usa

Very little new information.

Plastered with photos of Tosca. (cheesy 80's glamourshots type)
They should have put more success stories with pictures of OTHER people!
I don't mind pictures, but I don't want to see half a page of Tosca every 10 pages.

Seems like she keeps churning out the same book with new covers.

Fabulous at any age - Sacramento Book Review - Sacramento, CA
Reno begins this book on "the road to a fabulous new you - at any age," sharing her own life on her journey to forty and subsequently, the road to fifty. The following sections of the best body plan address nutrition, fitness, health strategies, beauty guidelines and inspiration. The nutrition section includes a check-off list of foods that can be used as a shopping list, while the Fitness program includes clear photographs showing the described exercises. Of special note is how each section of the book pays attention to the specific needs for each age group: thirties, forties, and fifties and beyond, so that the reader can personalize the plan to one's own age.

The author next offers healthful, delicious, easily prepared personal recipes, complete with nutritional values, to give the reader the tools to follow the Best Body Now plan. Included are such goodies as Mexican Tomato Chicken Soup, Hearty Braised Penne, Moussaka, and Gingerbread Rice Pudding.

To keep track of progress, the book concludes with a journal with diet, fitness and inspiration trackers to fill in, as well as a place to note daily commitments and long-term goals.

The Rook (The Patrick Bowers Files, Book 2) Review

FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers, from The Pawn, is called to San Diego, to help with a serial arsonist case. With an apparent suicide and a local kidnapping, the case seems to be getting more tangled, but Bowers unravels it nicely. It takes a personal twist when Bowers love interest and fellow investigator, Lien-hua is asked for by name. Meanwhile, his stepdaughter, Tessa, gets into some trouble of her own.

This was a high-paced suspense, with plenty of action and a page-turning conclusion. It was a good mystery. There were hints of prayer and a higher power--someone to lift us out of our pit; however, there was no strong message or testimony and no strong Christian character. While the characters were three-dimensional, I did not find myself attached to any of them. This was definitely a plot-driven story. Steven James has great use of language, and the fast paced mystery kept me fully engaged. I would recommend this to any mystery or suspense readers, secular or Christian. Although there was not much Christian depth to the story, the mystery was exceptional.

The Rook (The Patrick Bowers Files, Book 2) Overview

A baffling fire rips through a top-secret Naval research facility, and Special Agent Patrick Bowers is called in to investigate. His unique ability to pinpoint the time, place, and spatial factors of any crime tells him that the arsonists were going after something very specific-and they have succeeded. Now, with a device of unimaginable lethal power in the wrong hands, Bowers must stop a criminal mastermind from enveloping him and those he loves in a trap from which there is no escape...

Another Winner! - DLT -
Pawn is awesome. Rook is even better! I've become attached and connected with the characters in much the same vein as I was drawn into the world of Harry Potter and 24. The character feel real. The dialogue flows naturally. The story moves at a smooth pace. There is a ton of mounting tension that makes this novel a real page turner. The whole series has been magnificent and is well worthy of being placed on the New York Time's Bestselling List. Seriously. You can't go wrong with the Patrick Bowers series. And the Rook lives up to the hype. I guarantee.

Consent to Kill Review

I have had mixed feelings while reading this book. Part of me enjoyed the "plotting and action" that Vince Flynn is so famous for. The other part disliked the extensive and often unnecessary explanations. Of course, the plot itself is also an issue. I didn't like this plot very much :-(
Despite the issues named above, I liked this book almost as much as the previous ones.

Consent to Kill Overview

Fearless counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp finds himself directly in the line of fire in the latest riveting political thriller from New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn.

For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come.

Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form -- an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him.

Consent to Kill takes listeners behind the headlines and catapults them to the front lines of the global war on terror. It sizzles "with inside information, military muscle, and CIA secrets" (Dan Brown). Vince Flynn mixes military technology with his exclusive knowledge of Washington politics to create a hero that Americans will wish existed outside the realm of fiction.

The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut (Signet) Review

I had a friend tell me I needed to read "Carry" when I was about 13 or 14. I did so riding back and forth on the the bus to school. It was a cool story and appealed to the teenager in me. It made me interested in Mr. King.
"The Stand" came out when I was about 16. I checked it out at the public library and I took it home, and paid the late fees. Which said alot coming from a poor family like mine was. TRUST ME, I had to finish this book. It was a lengthy novel and the characters ended up being like someone you knew personally and you had to know what thier fate was. In fact I missed a couple of days of school because I stayed up all night reading and faked it off the next morning.
This book still rates as the best Novel I've ever read, and it's been 30 years. I now have a grown Son in the Military who states that "The Stand" is only 1 of 2 books that ever made him cry.
I loved it so much I wrote Mr. King and asked him to sign a copy of the book for me when I was 16, I still have his written response to do just that and hope to follow up on that now that I'm 46 years old, as I search for a 1st edition of the book in antique stores and such.
This novel is worth your time. You will probebley cry also, because some stories surpass a time line. This is one of them.

The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut (Signet) Overview

The ultimate battle between good and evil

The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut (Signet) Specifications

In 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review of The Stand in which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it.

The Stand is like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.

"I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke."

There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book. --Fiona Webster

This is an amazing book. Downloaded it to my Kindle app on my Droid. Stephen King is great.

My Favorite Stephen King Novel - John M. Strubhart - Austin, TX
Much has been written about this novel. I only want to add that the characters are so memorable that even 20 years after reading the uncut edition in dead tree format, I want to shout joyful greetings at them. I also think that when Stephen King stuck to writing stories of the forces of good versus the forces of evil, he was at his best. I love this journey. The Kindle versiom is so much lighter a load to bear as I travel this long highway.

Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang Review

Chelsea Handler's third book is a charm. Packed with hilarious tales stemming from her childhood till present, this foul-mouthed babe with her unfiltered humor will make you pee in your pants with laughter from page one to end. Her deprecation of others, especially her family, is anything but serious because you have to remember that her favorite brunt of the joke is herself. She prides on stories about her early discovery of a soulmate named //coslospus//, no-brainer arguments with live in boyfriends, her father's man boobs, and so much more.

Handler's narration of her unique family setup presumably played a big factor in why she is who she is now and though there may be quite a number of instances where she slams family members and friends, it's all done in good comedy. This side-splitting read definitely had the Rich-Jewish-Jersey-Girl-formula, but Handler takes it to a whole new level with her distinctive antics. This was a very entertaining read that does not take a lot of intellect to understand.

Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang Overview

WHAT . . . A RIOT!

Life doesn't get more hilarious than when Chelsea Handler takes aim with her irreverent wit. Who else would send all-staff emails to smoke out the dumbest people on her show? Now, in this new collection of original essays, the #1 bestselling author of Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea delivers one laugh-out-loud moment after another as she sets her sights on the ridiculous side of childhood, adulthood, and daughterhood.

Family moments are fair game, whether it's writing a report on Reaganomics to earn a Cabbage Patch doll, or teaching her father social graces by ordering him to stay indoors. It's open season on her love life, from playing a prank on her boyfriend (using a ravioli, a fake autopsy, and the Santa Monica pier) to adopting a dog so she can snuggle with someone who doesn't talk. And everyone better duck for cover when her beach vacation turns into matchmaking gone wild. Outrageously funny and deliciously wicked, CHELSEA CHELSEA BANG BANG is good good good good!

CHELSEA HANDLER ON...

Being unpopular: "My parents couldn't have been more unreasonable when it came to fads or clothes that weren't purchased at a pharmacy."

Living with her boyfriend: "He's similar to a large toddler, the only difference being he doesn't cry when he wakes up."

Appreciating her brother: "He's a certified public accountant, and I have a real life."

Arm-wrestling a maid of honor:"It wasn't her strength that intimidated me. It was the starry way her eyes focused on me, like Mike Tyson getting ready to feed."

Me Talk Pretty One Day Review

If you've ever known that mortifying feeling of making a hilarious gaffe when trying to speak a second language, then you simply must read this book. I was crying with laughter when David described his transition from sounding like an 'evil baby' to a 'hillbilly' when trying to express himself in French. 'Is them's the thoughts of cows?' is a phrase that will always be burned in my memory, and which makes this my favorite of all of David's many excellent books. Thank you, David, for sharing your torment with us!

Me Talk Pretty One Day Overview

A new collection from David Sedaris is cause for jubilation. His recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails. Compared by The New Yorker to Twain and Hawthorne, Sedaris has become one of our best-loved authors.

Me Talk Pretty One Day Specifications

David Sedaris became a star autobiographer on public radio, onstage in New York, and on bestseller lists, mostly on the strength of "SantaLand Diaries," a scathing, hilarious account of his stint as a Christmas elf at Macy's. (It's in two separate collections, both worth owning, Barrel Fever and the Christmas-themed Holidays on Ice.) Sedaris's caustic gift has not deserted him in his fourth book, which mines poignant comedy from his peculiar childhood in North Carolina, his bizarre career path, and his move with his lover to France. Though his anarchic inclination to digress is his glory, Sedaris does have a theme in these reminiscences: the inability of humans to communicate. The title is his rendition in transliterated English of how he and his fellow students of French in Paris mangle the Gallic language. In the essay "Jesus Shaves," he and his classmates from many nations try to convey the concept of Easter to a Moroccan Muslim. "It is a party for the little boy of God," says one. "Then he be die one day on two... morsels of... lumber," says another. Sedaris muses on the disputes between his Protestant mother and his father, a Greek Orthodox guy whose Easter fell on a different day. Other essays explicate his deep kinship with his eccentric mom and absurd alienation from his IBM-exec dad: "To me, the greatest mystery of science continues to be that a man could father six children who shared absolutely none of his interests."

Every glimpse we get of Sedaris's family and acquaintances delivers laughs and insights. He thwarts his North Carolina speech therapist ("for whom the word pen had two syllables") by cleverly avoiding all words with s sounds, which reveal the lisp she sought to correct. His midget guitar teacher, Mister Mancini, is unaware that Sedaris doesn't share his obsession with breasts, and sings "Light My Fire" all wrong--"as if he were a Webelo scout demanding a match." As a remarkably unqualified teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago, Sedaris had his class watch soap operas and assign "guessays" on what would happen in the next day's episode.

It all adds up to the most distinctively skewed autobiography since Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia. The only possible reason not to read this book is if you'd rather hear the author's intrinsically funny speaking voice narrating his story. In that case, get Me Talk Pretty One Day on audio. --Tim Appelo

A little more information please - Frank Hoffman - Philadelphia
Given that Amazon includes a track list for CDs, it seems odd that the same information isn't available for audiobooks. This audio version of Sedaris' book is apparently "abridged" -- it would be nice to know what's been left out.

Moderately Successful Comedy Routine - Judah - Terre Haute In USA
This book is like one of those comedians you see on TV that you think is funny enough to channel squat around, but you don't remember a single joke s/he told in a week. The routine is publishable, doesn't stick in the mind, and would be 'meh' if you saw it a second time. That's how I feel about this book. It's amusing, but ultimately lacking substance.

I thought the funniest parts were about Dave's sister Amy and not about Dave. Dave comes on strong with opinions, though they are couched in wit, and I didn't always agree. Maybe I saw the cynicism behind the humor? This soured the good mood the book creates.

This is a great book to borrow from a library, but not a good book to own unless you find it hilarious. For me, it's not a re-reader, thus three stars. I enjoyed it while reading, but I would not enjoy reading it again.

We Are Not Amused - R. Smith - Chicago, IL United States
I have to agree with the minority reviewers who thought this wasn't very funny. This is my first Sedaris book and I've heard lots of hype about how hilarious he is. Mind you, I have a wicked, twisted sense of humor, am gay, a former writer, and make my friends crack up constantly. So, I figured someone like Sedaris would have me in stitches. I'm about halfway through the book and I think I snorted a little (in laughter, not illicit chemicals) only once. Other than that I've barely cracked a smile. I don't get why people think this is so hilarious? It's not awful by any stretch, but it's hardly side-splitting humor. I hate to say it, but I think on a bad day I'm funnier than this. Honestly, I'm a little bummed. I wanted to laugh. Really I did.
